I missed the pistol match at 9:00am this morning as I was trying to get my flight to Sydney settled...still working on it. But I did make to the range around 10:00am and got a chance to to talk to Vic Alvarez, one of the trainers at the range. Vic worked with Mike Jones and Ruth Hayes, former pentathletes in the Seattle area. He's also worked with many other high level shooters and his own son has done very well both in the Navy program and in general competitions. Vic gave me a lot of good information on the sport and some more advice on purchasing my first pistol. I think I'll wait until Sydney though to get a feel for which weapons are out there and seem to work out the best. I'll be heading back on Monday evening to watch a free pistol match.
Did an endurance swim this afternoon...60 minutes of straight swimming. I was definitely tired at the end, but it felt pretty good overall. In these endurance swims, you have a lot of time to become one with your stroke. After about the 4th set of 10 laps, I could really feel the technique of my stroke and make little tweaks here and there. At this point, don't plan on doing a whole lot of endurance stuff, either in the run or swim, but it will help build a better base. Gone are the days of two hour crew practices at 5:00am in the morning, so I need to do something to stay in shape.
